Exercise: Letting go

Sometimes there may be something in our lives that causes harm, anxiety, exhaustion, fear, or even feelings of panic. In such situations, it can be helpful to make a change in life and possibly let go of something that is having a harmful impact.

Letting go is a conscious decision

Letting go is a conscious decision, and when considering it, you might reflect on:

  • What are you hoping to achieve with the change?
  • What motivates you to make it?
  • What do you want to gain?
  • Is the change necessary from the perspective of your well-being?
Change requires motivation

Change always requires motivation, social support, and a certain tolerance for anxiety when letting go of something familiar — as well as hope for the change itself.

Choosing to change means challenging the problem

Even small changes often have a significant impact on both psychological and physical well-being. For some people, making changes is easier than for others. Be gentle, kind, and compassionate toward yourself. When letting go and making changes, small steps help.

Questions to help you with the decision

Here are some questions that may help you make a decision:

  • What harms are present in your current situation?
  • How are you coping if the situation remains the same?
  • What benefits are there in your current situation?
  • What drawbacks might change bring?
  • What benefits could change bring?
  • Are you willing to let go of something old? When? This decision can be made at any time and can also relate to emotions or thoughts.
  • What are your own small steps toward change?
  • What is the first small sign of something better?
