Rape checklist
If you have been raped or attempted rape
Even if you don’t have any visible injuries, traces of sexual abuse can often only be verified by a doctor. If possible, do not get washed or change your clothes.
Anyone over the age of 16 who has experienced sexual violence in less than a month can go to the Seri support centre, regardless of whether the person who has experienced sexual violence has filed a criminal complaint.
The Seri support centre provides forensic investigation, trauma support, psychological counselling, and therapy for victims of sexual violence. A multi-professional team works in the Seri support centre: doctors, on-call doctors, midwives, psychologists and a social worker.
A forensic examination can be done within seven days, but the best samples will be obtained within three days. Forensic samples are taken at Seri support centres in Finland. There is no requirement to report a crime, so there is no need to be afraid of it.
In Finland, e.g. Rape support centre Tukinainen and Victim Support Finland RIKU provide assistance. Read more: Guides and instructions for victims of rape by RIKU.
Rape or attempted rape is a distressing event, but you can overcome it. Talk about it to someone close and reliable. In addition to talking with close ones, it is worth talking to a professional. Remember, you are not responsible for the event. The offender is guilty and accountable for what has happened.
You can report a crime at any police station or online.
You can also take a friend or a support person to the police station. At Victim Support Finland (RIKU), you can ask for free support staff trained in their duties.
