Internal, regional and international cases of trafficking
Types of human trafficking depending on where it occurs
Trafficking can occur in different ways depending on the route taken by the victim. It can occur within the same country, between neighbouring countries, or between distant regions. In this sense, there are three main types:
1. Internal trafficking
This occurs within the same country. The person is recruited, transported, and/or received by illegal means and subjected to exploitation without crossing borders. It can even happen within the same city or region.
2. Regional trafficking
This occurs between neighbouring countries or within the same region (for example, between countries in the European Union or between neighbouring countries).
3. International trafficking
This involves movement between distant countries, sometimes even between continents. The person is recruited in one country and exploited in a different country.
