Attachment styles and schemas

Attachment styles and schemas can help us understand why difficult situations arise in relationships, particularly romantic relationships. These patterns can also contribute to conflict. Past experiences may influence how a person responds to the fear of abandonment, intimacy, conflict, or disappointment. One person may constantly seek reassurance of love, another may withdraw when intimacy feels threatening, and a third may react strongly when they feel rejected.

What matters is how a person behaves and treats others when conflicts arise in a relationship. Even difficult feelings should be possible to discuss, and both partners should make an effort to resolve disagreements.
